Known more for being the backing band for John Lennon & Yoko Ono, The Elephants Memory were formed in New York in late 1967 by Stan Bronstein (saxophone, clarinet, and vocals) and Rick Frank Jr. (drums).
During 1968 Carly Simon joined the band as their vocalist however she only remained with them for around 6 months before quitting. By 1969 the band had expanded and included in its line-up the blues rock guitarist Danny Adler and in the same year they contributed 2 songs to the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack.
Well known in the Greenwich Village area of New York, their reputation as a political active band brought them to the attention of John Lennon. In 1972 they backed him on his "Some Time In New York City" album and were later billed as Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band, performing with Lennon and Ono on various TV shows, albums and concerts.
On August 30, 1972, the band played with Lennon and Ono at the famous One to One Concert organized by Geraldo Rivera, to benefit the Willowbrook State School for children with intellectual disabilities. The concert was filmed and recorded, later released in February 1986 as the album Live in New York City.
On September 4, they played live again with Lennon and Ono at the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, performing "Imagine", "Now or Never" and "Give Peace A Chance".
This 45, released in 1969 appeared on their self titled debut album. Whilst released worldwide the single had little impact and failed to chart in the UK.
