Formed in the 1950s at the Vernons football pools company in Liverpool, the group started out as large musical ensemble of female singers eventually reducing to a group of 16.

Originally billed as The Voices Of Vernons the group first appeared on UK TV in 1957.  During 1958 & 1959 they regularly appeared on the Oh Boy! TV show singing with the house band as well as releasing several 45s on the Parlophone label.

In 1961 the band downsized to five members and then reduced to three singers. In  1962 the group was signed to Decca records where they released a further handful of 45s. 

This 45, released in January 1964 was one of their last releases.  The song obviously was cashing in on the mega hype surrounding the Fab Four.  The Vernons Girls also released a Beatles tribute album which became the first of its type to chart in the US.  

Another UK group called The Carefrees which featured previous members of The Vernons Girls also charted in the US with a Beatles tribute 45.  Another bit of Beatles trivia is that one of the Vernons Girls, Lynn Cornell, married the drummer Andy White who replaced Ringo Starr on an early recording of Love Me Do.

By 1964 the girls stopped releasing their own recordings but they continued singing together as became inhouse backing singers for Decca before moving on to other ventures.

The Mynah Birds It's My Time / Go On And Cry V.I.P. V.I.P.-25033 (2012) The Mynah Birds were a Canadian R&B/Garage band active 1964 through to 1967.  The band is notable due to a few of its famous band members, namely Neil Young, Rick Matthews (aka Rick James) and Bruce Palmer. In early 1966 the band was signed to Motown records and recorded this 45 which was scheduled to be released on Motown's subsidiary label V.I.P. that May.  The story goes that the band found out that their manager had stolen the advance they received from Motown so they fired him.   In return he informed Motown that Rick James was AWOL from the US Navy.  Rick was subsequently arrested by the Navy and jailed.  Motown shelved the single and cancelled plans for an album so Young and Palmer famously sold their musical equipment, bought a hearse to drive to LA and once there helped form Buffalo Springfield. The Animals The Animals Is Here EP Columbia SEG 8374 (1964) An early EP from the original lineup of the band namely vocalist Eric Burdon, guitarist Hilton Valentine, bass guitarist Chas Chandler, keyboardist Alan Price and drummer John Steel.  The group formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo and they performed as the Alan Price Combo. They later changed their name to the Animals. They were supposedly dubbed "animals" because of their wild stage act, and the name stuck. Known for their gritty, bluesy sound, they balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm-and-blues-oriented album material and were part of the British Invasion of the US. FLAC
