Mods '79 - Green Onions
Green Onions / High On Your Love
Casino Classics CC 13 (1979)
My musical tastes vary greatly and I would not define all in my collection as classics. Some of it still thrills me as much as when I first heard it, some of it has not stood the test of time, a few I have just to complete a label or artist discographies. This one, pulled at random, falls into the last category.
Thinking back to 1979, Mods were back, Quadrophenia was on the big screen and parkas were everywhere (even I had one!). Northern Soul was still happening, 2Tone was beginning and every label wanted a piece of the action. This single appears to have been released to "cash in" to that 1979 vibe.
Firstly I can find no information relating to the band so I assume it was a bunch of studio musicians put together under a cool sounding name to record this 45. The A side is a standard rendition of the Booker T classic played reasonably well but nothing special. It states on the label "This song featured in the film Quadrophenia". A blatant attempt to dupe the record buying public as the song did feature in the movie but not this cover version. The film used the original Booker T version which was re-issued on Atlantic Records around the same time as this 45's release. The flip side of this 45 is a mish-mash of a disco/soul/mod dancer number that doesn't really make it, a throw away track.
Casino Classics basically catered to the UK Northern Soul scene, re-releasing classic tracks that were hard to find in the UK. This 45 however is the runt of the label's output being neither a soul classic or a re-release of a decent tune. Many like me bought all the labels releases unheard as you thought you would be getting quality music (think The Flirtations, Tommy Hunt, Al Wilson). I recall at the time feeling let down by this one and forty six years on I still feel the same but then I can be known to be wrong so have a listen yourself and see what you think.
