John Watson Jr. (1935 - 1996) known professionally as Johnny Guitar Watson, was an American musician who recorded and played throughout the 50s and 60s gaining a name for his electric blues style. In the 70s he reinvented himself as an urban soul singer/funk maestro releasing music which finally saw him achieving higher success.
Identified as perhaps Johnny's most famous song, this song was originally recorded in 1957 as a blues number. In 1963 the song was re-recorded and released as a single with limited American success. This 1978 version is another re-recording.
The song was recorded by Steve Miller in 1968 for his album "Sailor" and he referenced the song in the 1973's "The Joker" - "some call me the gangster of love".
