Janie Jones - Witches Brew
Witches Brew / Take-A My Tip
His Master's Voice POP 1495 (1965)
Jones started out as a cabaret singer in the late 50s performing in many clubs and theatres. She first had a brush with notoriety in 1964, attending a movie premier in a topless dress. The following year this single was released, the first of a few pop singles.
In the late 60s a sex scandal engulfed the BBC. The BBCs top disc jockeys and executives were caught up in a scandal namely that in return for playing their records, music companies hired prostitutes for them.
Orgies were arranged involving BBC staff, call girls and others at Janie's house in Kensington in west London. From behind a two-way mirror, other executives and celebrities were said to have looked on.
Following a lengthy investigation she was found guilty of "controlling prostitutes" and trying to pervert the course of justice. She was jailed in 1974 for seven years serving three.
Following her release she became the subject of a song by The Clash called "Janie Jones", which was released in 1977 on the band's debut album.
Aaah this more to my taste!
