In order to cash in on the Northern Soul scene of the 1970's, Russ Stanley (the DJ who is credited with championing Northern Soul music at the Wigan Casino) met up with a Wigan band called Sparkle and renamed them Wigan's Ovation.

They hit the charts in 1975 with three 45s which led to over a dozen appearances on Top Of The Pops.  The band from the start were written off as being uncool, laughable and an imitation of the bands the soul fans idolised (and danced too).

Although all three 45s charted the band were never a hit with the purists, however credit should be given to the band as their TV appearances on TOTP was the way many UK teenagers, me included, got their first experience of the Northern Soul subculture which had till then been a limited underground scene.

This 45 released in October 1975 was their third and last 45 on the Spark label. It reached #41 in the UK charts.

Tenpole Tudor Wunderbar / Tenpole 45 Stiff Buy 120 (1981) Tenpole Tudor were a punk band fronted by Eddie (Edward) Tudor-Pole. The band (and in particular Eddie) were first noticed when he appeared in the Sex Pistols' film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle and on three of the singles released from the soundtrack. At one point (prior to the band folding) he was touted as a replacement singer for Johnny Rotten (John Lydon).  Initially releasing a 45 in 1980 on Korova Records, this was their 3rd single on Stiff Records and it reached #16 in the UK charts. As well as his musical career Eddie has appeared in numerous film roles including Sid and Nancy, Harry Potter and Les Misérables. He also fronted the TV show The Crystal Maze for 28 episodes in the 1990's. BUY 120

The Mynah Birds It's My Time / Go On And Cry V.I.P. V.I.P.-25033 (2012) The Mynah Birds were a Canadian R&B/Garage band active 1964 through to 1967.  The band is notable due to a few of its famous band members, namely Neil Young, Rick Matthews (aka Rick James) and Bruce Palmer. In early 1966 the band was signed to Motown records and recorded this 45 which was scheduled to be released on Motown's subsidiary label V.I.P. that May.  The story goes that the band found out that their manager had stolen the advance they received from Motown so they fired him.   In return he informed Motown that Rick James was AWOL from the US Navy.  Rick was subsequently arrested by the Navy and jailed.  Motown shelved the single and cancelled plans for an album so Young and Palmer famously sold their musical equipment, bought a hearse to drive to LA and once there helped form Buffalo Springfield.
